Dream Interpretation

Jesus. What a fucked up dream I just woke up from.

I'm at a Creative Screenwriting Q&A after the screening of the current script I'm working on. Not only was it optioned and produced, but the movie itself - the finished product - was met with raving success too.

A dream come true.

So, there sit Annabel and I, answering questions after the audience has just finished watching the movie. It's going really well.

And in the middle of the Q&A session, just as I have the crowd roaring with applause and laughter...

I cough up blood and die.

Right there on stage. No warning or nothing.

But here's the best part.

Seconds before I die, as I'm lying on the floor after having just coughed up blood - I utter the words, "I knew this would happen."

Boom. Dead.

And of course, that's when I wake up.

Now I know most of you reading this are way smarter than I am, so maybe you have some opinions on what the hell that means.

And while you come up with theories on that dream, stay tuned this weekend as I have my six month recap to do, and a small announcement to make.

were you naked though? I sadly can only use Freudian interpretations of dreams

Maybe you're afraid that you'll change when you finally get to be a screenwriter. The YOU you were will be sold out to the highest bidder to make your career happen, essentially killing your integrity.

Chew on that, bucko.

Blood represents life energy. So basically you're vomiting up your energy (and dying) while people (whose opinion you care about/who look up to you) watch. Do you feel too exposed right now in some area of your life? Is something on the line?

Or, another interpretation, you fear that success will cost you your life.

MQ - Not all my stories involve nudity, sir.

Emily - You're forgetting that I have no integrity. I'd whore myself out to write Deuce Bigalow: Afghani Gigolo if it meant a foot in the door.

SCFI - I've mentioned a few times I feel vulnerable to the failure that's likely with following this path - which makes sense, of course - I just didn't expect the dream to be so literal.

In my ultra-scientific nomanclature, I call this a "top level dream." It is what it is. Screenwriting wasn't even symbolically represented as a pear or something.

Unless...

Screenwriting actually represents something else in your life. And Annabel represents a different sort of partner...

I think it just means you have a good, dark sense of humor, even in your dreams.

Okay, not really, but I suck at dream interpretation and my dark sense of humor made me laugh at your death. Sorry for your loss.

On the bright side, this dream makes the ones I have of loosing teeth or my car overheating seem much less frightening. And for that, I thank you.

p.s. check for ulcers

Uh, that's losing. I promise I can spell.

Thank you for allowing me to live and savor our sweet victory.

I think the dream was due to your upcoming birthday. As John Melloncamp says, "Growing up leads to growing old and then to dying. And dying to me don't sound like all that much fun." Call me Freud. ;)

Whoa, wait -- hold on...

Did someone here mention screenwriter, career, and killing your integrity all in the same comment?

Not sure I can comprehend that...

It means you want to be a pro, but you're not ready yet. Once you're ready, you'll not only survive the dream but live it too.

I had many a dream like yours as I tried to climb up the professional dancer ranks. Now I just strip.

Keep dreaming, Crash. You can be the hot, sweaty Flashdance chick of screenwriting some day. :-)
